BiographyMark Millet illustrates the spirit of the south. His paintings
give intensity and scope to scenes that move across, into and
out of his living canvases. Millet’s canvases do more than
just picture the changes and developments over the course of this
century - his paintings are alive with brilliant colors and ivory
light. They create a sense of place from the everyday to the
lost landmarks. Millet’s interest in history and architecture
only serves as a compliment to his artwork. It greatly enhances
his paintings.
Through his recounting of the vanishing scenes of the south, Millet
has become known as a nostalgia artist. His representative drawing
and loose watercolor style are perfect techniques for securing
the past and making time stand still. Millet continually searches
for that perfect scene to capture. While traveling the back roads
of Mississippi, an old store that has already seen its better
days or kids walking on an old abandon railroad stir his creativity
and excitement.
Millet comes from a long line of artists. He started his artistic
journey by winning a scholarship from Hinds Community College
where he studied under Bob Dunaway. After school Millet spent
a year creating silk screen art — then landed a job with
Mississippi Federation Co-op as an in house art director for eight
years. When the company was bought out in 1992 and moved its headquarters
to Arkansas, Millet opened his own studio and gallery at its present
location in Ridgeland.
Millet has won a variety of regional art contests. His art is a component of private collections all over the country and even as far as Paris, France. He has also done work for many large corporations such as McDonald’s and Raytheon Aerospace and Municipalities.
Mark works in oils, acrylic, and watercolors. He has been known to paint everything from portraits and landscapes to murals and kitchen floors.
